Matt Dolan, Attorney General Betty Montgomery, Sheriff Vernon Stanforth Condemn J.D. Vance Statement Demonizing U.S. Law Enforcement

Current & Former Ohio Law Enforcement Officials Call on Vance to Retract Statement

Chagrin Falls, Ohio: Former Assistant State Attorney General and Republican U.S. Senate candidate Matt Dolan today joined with former Ohio Attorney General Betty Montgomery and National Sherrifs’ Association President Vernon Stanforth to condemn J.D. Vance’s statement demonizing U.S. Law Enforcement.

According to an April 30 report from the Columbus Dispatch, at a Saturday stop in West Chester, Ohio, J.D. Vance downplayed the seriousness of the ongoing federal investigation of Rep. Matt Gaetz’s past relationship with a minor that includes allegations of sex trafficking. Vance went on to demonize the U.S. Law Enforcement community, saying “Being accused of a crime, as we’ve learned in the past four years in this country, is very often more about corrupt law enforcement than it is about anything anybody’s actually done. Do I think Matt Gaetz is a child sex predator? Of course I don’t.”

“In the 40 years I’ve served Ohio in uniform, I have never witnessed such a broad and demeaning indictment of the hardworking local, state, and federal law enforcement from a candidate for high office. At a time in which police officers and sheriffs across America are tasked with combating increased incidents of violent crime, it’s only appropriate for Mr. Vance to immediately retract his inflammatory statement,” said National Sheriffs’ Association President and Fayette County Sheriff Vernon Stanforth.

“I am shocked at J.D. Vance’s shameful, condescending, and ignorant attack on dedicated members of law enforcement who put their lives on the line every day to protect us. The fact that J.D. is more inclined to defend a man being investigated for sex trafficking than our brave police officers and sheriffs, clearly proves he is unfit to serve as Ohio’s next U.S. Senator,” said former Ohio Attorney General Betty Montgomery.

“I condemn J.D. Vance’s demeaning characterization of law enforcement in the strongest terms possible. His embrace of Matt Gaetz and comments attacking law enforcement illustrate the degree to which he is out of touch with Ohio. Having served as a prosecutor and former Assistant State Attorney General, I understand the oath taken by members of Ohio’s law enforcement community. Rest assured, as their next U.S. Senator, I will not only treat them with the respect they have earned, but also work tirelessly to ensure they have the tools and resources they need to keep Ohioans safe,” said Matt Dolan.

Matt Dolan’s public service career began as Assistant State Attorney General and later as Chief Assistant Prosecutor for Geauga County. Betty Montgomery was the first female Attorney General of Ohio serving from 1995 to 2003. Vernon P. Stanforth has been the Fayette County, Ohio, sheriff for 26 years. He was elected President of the National Sheriffs’ Association in 2021.
